This isn't a lab-tested, climate-by-climate certification (fabric performance depends on ventilation, direct sun exposure, air conditioning, and how a room is used, not just the city you live in). Think of it as general guidance to help you ask the right questions when you're choosing a fabric for your space.

Why Climate Matters for Sofa Fabric

Two things change as you move between a humid coastal environment and a dry inland one:

Moisture exposure. Coastal humidity means more ambient moisture in the air year-round, more condensation near windows, and, depending on the home, more salt air if you're close to the sea. Fabrics that absorb moisture easily can feel damp to the touch, take longer to dry after a spill, and are more prone to mustiness over time in poorly ventilated rooms.

Dryness, dust, and sun intensity. Inland areas like Gauteng deal with a different set of pressures: lower humidity, more airborne dust, and often more direct, intense sun through large windows. This tends to show up as visible dust on textured or fibrous surfaces, and faster fading on fabrics that aren't UV-treated.

Neither climate is "worse" for a sofa, they just call for different priorities.

What to Prioritise in a Humid, Coastal Home (Cape Town)

If you're furnishing a home in Cape Town or anywhere else with consistent humidity, the fabrics worth prioritising are the ones designed to resist moisture and wipe clean easily, rather than absorb it.
