A sofa is usually somewhere children sit.
But what if it could also become something they play with?
Our Build A Sofa was designed to blur the line between furniture and play. Instead of being one fixed piece, its high-density foam blocks can be moved and rearranged, giving kids the freedom to build, break down and create different configurations.
Think sofa one minute, creative playground the next.
In short: Build A Sofa is our modular kids’ sofa designed for both comfortable seating and imaginative play. Its movable foam blocks fit together almost like a puzzle, allowing children to experiment with different arrangements while giving them a dedicated piece of furniture that still looks at home in your living space.
What Is a Build A Sofa?
Our Build A Sofa is an interactive kids’ sofa built around movable upholstered foam blocks.
Inspired by the way children play with building blocks and puzzles, the individual pieces can be arranged and rearranged rather than keeping them locked into one permanent configuration.
That means children aren't limited to simply sitting on it.
They can take it apart, put it back together and experiment with how the different shapes work alongside one another.
At its full sofa size, Build A Sofa measures 200 cm wide, 75 cm high and 90 cm deep, giving little ones plenty of room for both sitting and play.
What Makes a Kids’ Play Sofa Different From a Normal Sofa?
The biggest difference is simple: interaction.
A conventional sofa is designed primarily around sitting and lounging. A play sofa adds another layer by allowing its components to become part of playtime.
With Build A Sofa, the movable blocks invite children to decide what happens next.
They can rearrange them, explore different configurations and then put everything together again when it's time to sit down.
It turns a piece of furniture they're already going to use into something they can actively engage with.
And for parents, it means the playroom or children's space doesn't necessarily need another large toy competing for floor space.
Can a Sofa Really Encourage Creative Play?
We designed Build A Sofa with exactly that in mind.
When children rearrange the individual pieces, they're making decisions about where things fit, what they can create and how different shapes work together.
That kind of open-ended play can encourage children to experiment with spatial awareness, problem-solving, motor skills and independent thinking.
Most importantly, there's no single "correct" configuration they have to create.
They get to decide.
One afternoon it might simply be their sofa. The next, those same pieces can become the starting point for whatever they've imagined.
That's the fun of it.
Is Build A Sofa Comfortable Enough for Everyday Sitting?
Play is only half the job. It still needs to work as a sofa.
Build A Sofa uses high-density foam blocks to create a soft and supportive sitting experience, while its structure is made using a sturdy pine plywood frame and solid pine supports.
So once playtime winds down and the pieces come back together, children still have a comfortable place to sit, read, relax or watch their favourite show.
It's furniture first — just furniture that happens to be much more fun.
What Fabric Is Build A Sofa Upholstered In?
Anyone with children knows that choosing furniture isn't only about how it looks.
Spills, marks and everyday mess are part of the deal.
That's why our Build A Sofa is upholstered in FibreGuard, a high-performance fabric with permanent stain-resistant technology as well as anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties.
The FibreGuard options available on Build A Sofa have a 40,000 Martindale rub rating, giving the fabric tested resistance to the abrasion that comes with everyday use.
If you're wondering what that number actually means, we've also put together our guide to Martindale rub counts and sofa fabric durability.
Build A Sofa is available in a selection of versatile FibreGuard colours, including Graphite, Linen, Ivory, White and Cinder, making it easier to choose something that works with the rest of your home rather than making the children's furniture feel completely separate from it.
Is a Modular Kids’ Sofa Worth It?
If you want children's furniture to serve more than one purpose, a modular play sofa can make a lot of sense.
Instead of buying a seat that performs one function, you're giving children somewhere they can:
-
Sit and relax
-
Read or watch TV
-
Build and rearrange
-
Explore different configurations
-
Use during imaginative play
And as their interests change, the furniture doesn't dictate exactly how they have to use it.
That's one of the things we like most about Build A Sofa: the child decides what it becomes.
Does Kids’ Furniture Have to Look Like Kids’ Furniture?
Not necessarily.
We wanted Build A Sofa to feel playful without making parents sacrifice the look of their home.
The simple forms and neutral FibreGuard colour options mean it can work in a dedicated playroom or kids’ bedroom, but it can also sit comfortably within a family living area.
Because sometimes children's furniture needs to exist in the same room as everything else.
And we'd rather it looked good while doing it.
Is Build A Sofa Made to Order?
Yes.
Like our sofas, Build A Sofa is made to order and dispatched in 20 working days from our Cape Town factory.
You can also order up to four free fabric swatches before choosing your colour, giving you the chance to see the fabric in your own space and compare it with the rest of your home.
Build, Break Down, Rebuild, Repeat
Children have a habit of seeing possibilities where adults see furniture.
A cushion isn't always a cushion. A block isn't always a block. And a sofa doesn't necessarily have to stay a sofa.
That's the thinking behind our Build A Sofa.
We've combined comfortable seating, durable FibreGuard upholstery and movable foam blocks to create a piece that gives children a space of their own, without deciding exactly how they have to use it.
Because the best part of imaginative play is figuring that out for themselves.
