Is 90,000 good? Is 40,000 enough? And does choosing the highest number automatically mean you're getting the best fabric?

Not necessarily.

A Martindale rub count is a measure of a fabric's resistance to abrasion. In simple terms, it helps indicate how well an upholstery fabric can withstand repeated rubbing and everyday wear. The higher the result, the greater the fabric's tested abrasion resistance, but Martindale is only one factor to consider when choosing a sofa fabric.

What Is the Martindale Test?

The Martindale test is a standard method used to assess the durability of textiles.

During testing, a piece of fabric is subjected to repeated rubbing under controlled conditions. The test continues until the fabric reaches a specified level of wear.

The result is expressed as a number of Martindale rubs.

So when you see a fabric described as having a 40,000 Martindale rub count, it means that fabric achieved that abrasion result under testing.

It gives you a useful, standardised way of comparing the wear resistance of different upholstery fabrics.

Is a Higher Martindale Rub Count Better?

A higher Martindale rating means greater tested resistance to abrasion. It doesn't automatically mean it's the better fabric for your sofa.

This distinction matters.

Imagine you're comparing two Zorora fabrics:

Looking only at the numbers, you might assume Classic Textured is automatically the better choice.

A fabric with a 40,000 Martindale rub count offers substantial abrasion resistance for everyday upholstered furniture.

You'll find Classic Textured across many of our sofas, which makes it a strong option if you're looking for a hard-wearing everyday upholstery without necessarily needing the additional stain-resistant properties offered by some of our Premium fabrics.

This is where understanding Martindale becomes useful: instead of simply choosing the colour you like, you can compare how the different fabric options may suit the way your sofa will actually be used.

What Does 100,000 Martindale Rubs Mean?

Once you reach 100,000 Martindale rubs, you're looking at extremely high tested abrasion resistance.

Our Performance Luxe fabric is one example.

Performance Luxe has a 100,000 Martindale rub rating and combines that durability with stain-repellent, water-resistant, bacteria-resistant, oil-protection and odour-protection properties.

You'll find Performance Luxe available on sofas such as the Zozo, giving you an option designed for households where the sofa is likely to see plenty of everyday use.

Again, though, the biggest number shouldn't automatically win.

Does a Higher Martindale Rating Mean a Fabric Is Stain-Resistant?

No.

This is probably one of the most important things to understand about Martindale.

The test measures abrasion resistance. It doesn't tell you whether a fabric will resist coffee, wine, muddy paws or whatever else everyday life throws at your sofa.

Our Classic Textured fabric demonstrates this perfectly.

At 90,000 Martindale rubs, it has a higher abrasion rating than our 40,000-rub FibreGuard Smooth. But FibreGuard Smooth has permanent stain-resistant technology, whereas Classic Textured is water-repellent rather than stain-resistant.

They're measuring and solving different things.

So if spills are your biggest concern, don't choose upholstery based on Martindale alone.

Does Martindale Tell You If a Fabric Is Pet-Friendly?

Not by itself.

A high Martindale rating can be useful in a home with pets because it tells you about resistance to repeated abrasion.

But it doesn't tell you whether a cat's claws can snag the weave, whether dog hair will be noticeable against the colour, or how easily muddy paw marks can be cleaned.

If you're specifically choosing upholstery for a home with animals, look at Martindale alongside weave, texture, stain resistance and ease of maintenance.

What Else Should You Look at Besides Martindale?

Think of the Martindale rating as one piece of the puzzle.

When you're comparing sofa fabrics, we'd recommend looking at:

Stain protection: Is the fabric simply water-repellent, or does it offer built-in stain-resistant technology?

Texture and weave: Do you prefer something smooth and tightly woven, or something softer and more tactile?

Colour: How will it work with your room, natural light and everyday household use?

Feel: A fabric can perform brilliantly on paper and still not be the texture you want to sit on every evening.

Your lifestyle: A sofa in a busy family living room has different demands from an occasional chair in a bedroom.

Should You Always Choose the Highest Martindale Rating?

No. Choose the fabric that best matches how you live.

If abrasion resistance is your main concern, a higher Martindale rating gives you useful information.

If you're more worried about spills and stains, a fabric such as FibreGuard Smooth may make more sense even though its Martindale rating is lower than Classic Textured.

If you want both very high abrasion resistance and additional performance properties, Performance Luxe may be worth considering.

And if your sofa won't experience particularly heavy everyday use, there's little benefit in choosing a fabric solely because it has the biggest number on the specification sheet.

So, What Is a Good Martindale Rub Count for a Sofa?

There's no single number you need to chase.
