How High Should a Sofa Seat Be?

How High Should a Sofa Seat Be?

Sofa height can make a bigger difference to comfort than you might expect. Here’s what to consider when comparing higher and lower sofas, and why the legs, depth and cushioning matter too.

When you're choosing a sofa, width and depth usually get most of the attention.

But how high you sit matters too.

It can affect where your feet naturally rest, how easily you get up and whether the sofa feels upright or made for sinking into.

There isn't one perfect sofa seat height. The right height depends on your own height, how you like to sit and how the sofa's legs, seat depth and cushioning work together.

That's why we recommend looking at the whole sofa rather than one measurement.

What Is Sofa Seat Height?

Seat height measures from the floor to the top of the seat.

That's different from a sofa's overall height, which includes the backrest and cushions.

This distinction is important when you're comparing sofas online because a taller overall sofa doesn't necessarily mean you'll sit higher off the floor.

Our Zozo and Lira Luxe are great examples.

Zozo vs Lira Luxe: What's the Difference?

Our Zozo has a raised design with exposed legs. You can choose between Natural Oak Cone Legs and sleek Metal Legs, both of which create visible clearance between the sofa and floor.

Our Lira Luxe has a different silhouette and sitting experience, with shaped high-density seat foam and generous back and side cushioning designed for a comfortable, relaxed sit.

Here's where the measurements get interesting.

Our Zozo 3-Seater is 65 cm high overall, while our Lira Luxe 3-Seater is 80 cm high overall.

But that doesn't automatically mean you'll sit 15 cm higher on the Lira Luxe.

Those measurements include the backs of the sofas, not just the seats.

That's why comparing overall height alone can be misleading.

Do Higher Sofa Legs Make a Difference?

They certainly change how a sofa sits within the room.

A sofa with taller, exposed legs, like our Zozo, has more visible space underneath it. This can give the sofa a lighter, more elevated appearance.

A design that sits closer to the floor can feel more grounded and relaxed.

Legs are therefore worth looking at when you're trying to understand how high or low a sofa might feel, but they're still only one part of the equation.

The frame, foam and cushions all contribute too.

Is a Higher Sofa More Comfortable?

Not necessarily.

Some people prefer sitting a little higher because getting up can feel easier and their feet rest naturally on the floor.

Others want exactly the opposite.

If you're looking for somewhere to curl up, stretch out and properly sink in, a lower or deeper sitting position might feel more natural.

Your own height matters too.

A sofa that feels perfectly proportioned for someone taller might leave a shorter person sitting with their feet off the floor. Similarly, a very low sofa might not be comfortable for someone who prefers a more upright sitting position.

Neither is wrong. Comfort is personal.

Don't Forget About Sofa Depth

Height and depth work together.

A deeper sofa encourages you to settle further back, while a shallower sofa can create a more upright sitting position.

That's why we wouldn't recommend choosing a sofa based on height alone.

Think about height, depth, cushioning and support together.

If you're shopping online, compare those measurements with a sofa you already find comfortable. Measure what you have at home and use it as a reference point.

It makes those numbers on a product page much more meaningful.

The Best Way to Compare? Sit Down.

There are some sofa questions that measurements can't completely answer.

This is one of them.

At our Zorora showrooms, you can move between different designs and actually feel the difference for yourself.

Try a Zozo, then a Lira Luxe.

Notice where your feet sit. See how easily you get up. Lean back. Pay attention to the depth and cushioning.

And don't perch politely on the edge.

Sit the way you'd actually sit at home. That's the whole point.

So, How High Should Your Sofa Be?

There's no single measurement we'd recommend for everyone.

Instead, ask yourself:

Do my feet sit comfortably? Can I get up easily? Does the depth work for my height? And does the sofa support the way I actually like to sit?

Those answers matter more than chasing a supposedly perfect number.

Compare the dimensions of our sofas online, or visit your nearest Zorora showroom and sit-test different options for yourself.

Because when it comes to sofa comfort, a few centimetres can make a surprisingly big difference.
