"Made to order" sounds great, until you're the one waiting for your sofa to arrive. It's a fair question, and one we get a lot: if nothing is sitting ready-made in a warehouse, how long am I actually going to be sitting on the floor?
The honest answer is: it depends on what you've ordered and where you live, but it's not a mystery. Your sofa moves through two clear stages, manufacturing and dispatch, then delivery, and each one has a defined lead time. Here's exactly what that looks like in practice.
Stage 1: Manufacturing & Dispatch
This is where "made to order" actually happens. Once your order is placed and paid in full, it enters our production queue at our Cape Town factory. Your sofa is built from that point, not before, which is the whole reason you get to choose your own fabric, colour, and finish rather than picking from whatever's already built.
-
Sofas, Chairs & Ottomans: 20 working days
-
Cushions & Slipcovers: 10 working days
-
Express Shipping & Accessory Items: 1–3 working days
-
HAUS Decor Items: 1–3 working days
-
Pre-Order Items: as stated on the product page and at checkout
You'll always see the specific lead time for your item listed on the product page, so there's no guessing before you check out. We'll also confirm your Estimated Dispatch Date within 48 hours of your order going through, and reconfirm at least 24 hours before it actually leaves the factory.
Stage 2: Delivery
Once your sofa is dispatched, delivery lead time depends entirely on where you're based:
-
Cape Town & Surrounds: 1–3 working days
-
Gauteng: 3–5 working days
-
Major City Centres: 3–7 working days
-
Outlying Areas: 6–10 working days
A few specifics worth knowing:
-
Cape Town deliveries usually happen on the same day as dispatch.
-
Gauteng (Johannesburg/Pretoria) orders leave on our weekly Friday linehaul, typically arriving the following Monday or Tuesday.
-
George, Durban & Port Elizabeth deliveries typically happen Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays.
-
Deliveries are generally scheduled between 9:00 and 17:00 on weekdays.
So, Realistically: Order to Sofa
Add manufacturing and delivery together, and here's what the full journey looks like for our most popular product type:
|
Location |
Sofas, Chairs & Ottomans (Total) |
|
Cape Town & Surrounds |
~21–23 working days |
|
Gauteng |
~23–25 working days |
|
Major City Centres |
~23–27 working days |
|
Outlying Areas |
~26–30 working days |
For cushions and slipcovers, total time is significantly shorter, generally 11–20 working days depending on location, since they skip the longer sofa manufacturing queue entirely.
Why 20 Working Days for a Sofa?
It's a fair question, and the answer isn't "because we're slow", it's because a sofa isn't one part, it's several. Frame construction, foam cutting, upholstery, stitching, and quality inspection all happen in sequence, not all at once. Rushing any one of those stages is exactly how you end up with the kind of furniture that sags, squeaks, or falls apart within a year, the opposite of what a 10-year frame warranty is meant to back up.
Twenty working days is the time it takes to build a sofa properly, in the fabric and configuration you actually chose, rather than picking the nearest match off a warehouse floor.
What If My Order Has Mixed Items?
If your order combines products with different lead times, say, a made-to-order sofa and an in-stock cushion, the longest lead time applies to the entire order, and we don't offer split deliveries. If you'd rather receive the quicker item sooner, it's worth placing it as a separate order.
Will I Know What's Going On?
Yes. You'll get an Estimated Dispatch Date within 48 hours of ordering, a confirmation at least 24 hours before dispatch, and you can track your order's progress any time via our Track My Order page, or by chatting to Zara, our WhatsApp assistant, for an instant update.
Need to Change Your Delivery Date?
Plans shift. If you need to move your delivery date, reach out as early as possible at logistics@zororasofas.co.za. One thing worth knowing upfront: because our manufacturing slots and storage space are limited, a storage fee of R250 per week (or part thereof) applies if your delivery is delayed after manufacturing has started or finished. Full terms are on our Shipping page.
The Bottom Line
Made to order does mean a longer wait than buying off a showroom floor, but it's a defined, predictable wait, not an open-ended one. For most sofas, you're looking at roughly 3 to 4 weeks from order to delivery, depending on where you're based, in exchange for a piece that's actually built in the fabric and configuration you chose, backed by a 10-year frame warranty.
If you'd rather skip the wait altogether, our Express Shipping and Factory Edit Sale ranges include in-stock and ready-to-ship pieces that can be with you in days, not weeks.
